eZED are experts in rammed earth construction. Director Paul Jaquin holds a PhD in rammed earth and Director Paula Hugens grew up in a rammed earth house.

We have designed rammed earth buildings across New Zealand and work with both established contractors and owner builders.

Rammed earth is a monolithic construction technique where soil is compacted between removable formwork to form a solid wall. Stabilising agents and reinforcement can be added to improve the strength of rammed earth.

Paul has worked with academic researchers around the world developing the science of rammed earth construction, working to futher develop construction codes and national standards

Much of Paul’s early work looked at historic rammed earth construction, particularly in southern Europe, north Africa, and the Himalayan regions. More recently he has worked with rammed earth contractors, engineering many buildings across Aotearoa New Zealand.
